The one rule
Never let anyone start without giving you a price first. A decent plumber quotes before they touch anything. Be wary of a suspiciously low quote that balloons once the work's done, or anyone who won't put a number on it at all.

How to keep the bill down
Most of it comes down to not letting a small problem grow. Know where your stopcock is and how to turn it, so you can stop a leak the moment it starts instead of letting it soak into the floor. Deal with drips and damp patches early. And when you call, have the make, model and any fault code to hand. It means we turn up with the right parts and spend less time working it out.
